Samsung Galaxy Nexus with LTE Appears in Sprint Ad, Likely Coming at CES and with a 1.5GHz Processor?

Uh oh, I get the feeling that we were not supposed to see this ad quite yet. And yep, that’s most definitely a Sprint ad showing off the 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus as their “first” for a newly announced LTE network. We assume that we weren’t supposed to see it since the ad has a ticker at the bottom that reads “CES Live Feed.” This was likely going to be Sprint’s big announcement at CES, but that seems to have been spoiled. Whoops!

On another note, as you can see in the photo we grabbed above, the processor is being listed as a 1.5GHz dual-core processor rather than the 1.2GHz speed that the GSM and Verizon LTE versions have been clocked at. Not sure if that is a type-o or if they are getting a slightly beefed up chipset. I would imagine that it is still the same OMAP4460, since that TI processor can technically go up to 1.5GHz.

And 2012 CES craziness has officially begun.

Yes the 4460 is clocked at 1.5GHz by default but the reason they did not do that with the Nexus is because the board is not able to provide enough voltage. So I highly doubt it will be clocked at 1.5GHz unless they made some major changes. Ever wonder why there’s no 1.5GHz kernels out for the Nexus? Well there’s your answer.

The 4460 uses the same voltage at 1.5 as the 4430 does at 1.2, that’s the entire reason it’s named the 4460.

That’s not true. The Nexus certainly can support 1.5Ghz. That’s what the 4460 is built for otherwise it would be the 4430 based on voltage.. It’s simply being underclocked right now.
This ad went up way way early. Either it’s wrong in the ad or there’s a nice update coming for the rest of us. Someone is going to get major heat, especially since (legally speaking) it hurts the exclusive agreement Google has with VZ for another month or so. AT&T is going to get it soon as well.

Not so fast. The 4460 in it’s current form ( the version in the Galaxy Nexus ) is clocked at 1.2 because TI could not achieve reliable results at higher clock speeds. That is the reason why the Archos tablet that was supposed to have the 4460 has been delayed. While I am sure that the devs will get the Nexus up to and past 1.5 I suspect that people are going to be disappointed when they can’t get reliable results past 1.3-1.4.

My galaxy nexus is currently running at 1.4ghz with no issues at all. Not one hiccup . But I do know not everyone can run it that high.

Not true eh? So I guess all the people out there that cannot hit 1.5, or it performs worse than 1.2 is a myth? Or maybe the PCB does support it and Google lies? If its true that Sprint is running at 1.5, then they probably have a fixed PCB.

Engadget pointed out something important: Sprint’s LTE network won’t go live until mid-2012, at which point the Nexus is going to be more than 6 months old. At that point, most handsets are having the equivalent of their mid-life crisis. Being a Nexus, it’ll certainly have more staying power, but launching a network with a phone that’s over half a year old? Day late and a dollar short, same as always for Sprint.

Hardly. Sprint had the Galaxy SII, Verizon did not. Verizon also didn’t even get the Atrix. I think every carrier has their stronger and weaker times.

Verizon passed on the Galaxy SII in favor of the Nexus, launching a brand new version of Android. If I recall correctly, the Atrix and the Bionic were supposed to be equivalents for the two carriers, though we see what happened with that, obviously. But Verizon didn’t launch a new network type more than a half a year after its competitors with a 6-month-old device. Again, it has staying power since it’s a Nexus. But Sprint is last to market with LTE, and if this is correct, they aren’t even launching with a new/exclusive device?

I am happy for sprint and all my former network/evo family friends. You deserve the Galaxy Nexus too but that should be on a full flege LTE NETWORK. 4 cities opening isnt enough sprint needs to step up their game and that wont happen till August 2012 to be serious. Meanwhile an update to 1.5ghz better be in the woodworks for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus google knows what’s best for them.
